Garment Workers in Bangladesh – Why they are calling for a Green and Just Transition

I’ve worked over the last decades with the National Garments Workers Federation (NGWF) and recently received their press release that I felt communicates the urgency with which action is needed by the western fashion industry to decarbonise and support workers towards regular orders and living wages. For me reading through their list of demands is a reminder of just how bad things are and as Cyclone Remel hits India and Bangladesh and 800,000 have evacuated the dangers of the coast line – we are again reminded that it is the poorest people, those with the lightest carbon footprint – and often working in supply chains making clothes and food for us that are baring the brunt of climate change. Indeed, a green and Just Transition couldn’t come quick enough.
